Funeral Services were Thursday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Callaway United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial was that same afternoon at the Cambridge Cemetery with Military Honors at Cambridge. Visitation was held Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 5-7 p.m. at Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway. He was born Jan. 8, 1921, at Long Beach, California to Wayne E. and Laura Belle (Sellers) Axtell. Charles attended school through the first grade at Bellflower, Calif., and then the family moved to Nebraska, first to Ingham and then to Eustis, where he graduated from high school in 1938.  He attended the University of Nebraska and Barnes Business College in Denver. On July 6, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy.  He served as a Yeoman 3rd class aboard the U.S.S. Pecos during the war.  He attended Signal School in Indianapolis and boarded the Pecos in Norfolk, Va.  He traveled through the Panama Canal to the Phillipine Islands.  His job was to report to Washington D.C. the gallon of fuels dispensed and also worked in the log room for the chief engineer.  Charles was honorably discharged in February of 1946. Charles was united in marriage to Ruby Hueftle on March 8, 1953, in Eustis.  Three children were blessed to this union: Kurt, Steven and Karen.  Charles was employed at the LaRue Axtell Pumice Company prior to going into the service and mined pumice following the service.  The couple moved back to Nebraska to the Callaway area in 1953, where Charles was employed at Monroe Auto in Cozad. He retired in 1984.  He was a member of the Callaway Methodist Church for 75 years and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge at Elwood, a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J. USA, Hastings and Master Mason of Elwood, Lodge #167, also a member of the Eastern Star, Clara Chapter as well as Past Worthy Patron of Chapter #222.  Survivors include his loving wife:  Ruby Axtell of Lexington; two sons:  Kurt Axtell of Kearney; Steven Axtell of Ft. Calhoun; one daughter:  Karen (Brian) Plomondon of Erie, Colo.; five grandchildren:  Jeff Axtell of Wayne; Ashley Axtell of Gainesville, Fla.; Renee, Daniell & Dylan Plomondon all of Erie, Colo.
