As a child, he moved with his family to Cozad. The Cozad area remained his primary home throughout his life. Robert attended a one-room rural school with eight grades and one teacher. There was neither indoor heating nor running water; a coal burning stove provided heat in the winter. He went on to attend Cozad High School, where he graduated in 1939. Following his graduation, Robert attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Upon the involvement of the United States in WWII, Bob enrolled in ASTP (Army Specialized Training Program). After spending two years in medical school in Omaha, he was shipped to the Asiatic Pacific Theater of operations in the Philippine Islands with the 4th General Hospital. It was during this interim of time that Bob reconsidered his dedication to medicine and on arriving home from the war announced that unquestionably he wanted to resume his interest in agriculture and return to farm. Robert remained very involved through his life in farming and related agricultural ventures. At various times he expanded into cattle feeding, commercial grain storage and the alfalfa dehydrating business. On Dec. 28, 1952, Robert married Jean MacLean at Cozad. Three sons were born to their union; Robert Scott, March 10, 1954, Monte Allan, May 16, 1956 and David Michael in 1963. David was killed in a car accident in 1977. Bob was baptized in the Christian Church as a child, later joining the Methodist Church prior to his marriage to Jean. Through the years he served on a variety of its boards and committees. He became a Rotarian, belonged to the Masonic Lodge, receiving the Jordan Medal in 2005, the Tri-County Shrine Club and the Cozad Chamber of Commerce. He proudly continued his memberships in the service organizations, the American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed the years he served as President of the Dawson County Historical Society. In addition to his youngest son David, Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Grace Douglas, and a sister, Ellen Mary Kroh.
