Helen M. Gardner, 85, of Overton, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at Good 
Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
 
Funeral Services were Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at Overton Christian Church in 
Overton with Pastor Will Thompson and the Rev. Greg Gangwish, co-officiating. 
Burial was held in the Overton Cemetery at Overton.

Visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at the Overton Funeral Home in 
Overton.

Helen was born Feb. 26, 1925, to Leon and Annie (Rasmussen) Sayles in 
Kearney.  The family moved from Kearney to Overton Helen’s sophomore year of 
High School.  She graduated from Overton High School in 1943.  She went on to 
receive her bachelor’s degree in business and administration from the 
University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

She was united in marriage to John A. Gardner, Jr., on Aug. 1, 1948 at the 
Christian Church in Overton.  Four daughters were blessed to this union: Lynn, 
Kay, Nancy and Judi.

Helen and John spent the majority of their life in Overton.  Helen stayed busy 
raising her four daughters as well as being active in the church with Bible 
study and Sunday school. She was also involved in school activities.  She had 
a love for music and working with the Junior High Choir.  She played the organ 
on Sunday’s at the Overton Christian Church for many years.   

Survivors include her four daughters, Lynn (Bill) VanZandt of Mason City, Kay 
Gardner of Portland, Ore., Nancy (Bill) Simmerman of Elm Creek, Judi Gardner 
of Bangor, Maine; three grandchildren, Cary (Jason) of Lincoln, John (Mandy) 
VanZandt of Mason City, Annie Wessels of St. Paul and five great-
grandchildren, Addison, Shyan, Nevaeh, Nolan and Chloe.
 
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; infant sister, 
Madgel Ann and a granddaughter, Gayle VanZandt.
