Mason, age 87 of Cozad, former long-time Hastings resident, died Aug. 23, 2010 at his home in Cozad. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Christ The King Catholic Church in Cozad with Father Don O’Brien as celebrant. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Christ The King Catholic Church. Walter was born July 14, 1923 at Callaway to Frank and Hilma (Sjostedt) Mason. Walter graduated from Callaway High School in 1941. On Oct. 28, 1950, Walter married Zelpha Niles at Callaway. The couple made their home in Hastings until 1955, when they moved to Harvard. While in the Hastings area, Walter specialized in maintaining boiler and heater Systems with the Navy Depot. In 1959, the couple moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where Walter worked at the Air Force Academy. In the early 1970s the family returned to Hastings, where they remained for the next 40 years. Upon returning to the area, Walter worked with Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph, retiring in 1981. The couple had made their home in Cozad since 2009; they greatly enjoyed meeting new people and frequenting the Green Apple Cafe. Walter was a life-long member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was active as a Third Degree Knight in the Knights Of Columbus. Walter was active as a volunteer firefighter for over 25 years. On their 35th wedding anniversary, Walter and Zelpha travelled to Sweden together. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this coming October. Walter is survived by his wife, Zelpha Mason of Cozad; son, John (Mary) Mason of Omaha; daughter, Barbara (Mason) Cloeter of Lincoln; 6 grandchildren, Andrew (Noelle) Mason of Omaha, Ryan Mason of Lincoln, Aaron Mason of Omaha, Michaela (Spencer) Sandusky of Omaha, Brittany Cloeter and Rachel Cloeter both of Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his sister, Francis Klingensmith; and brother, Carl.
