McKee, 72, Elm Creek died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Memorial services were Tuesday, Nov. 30 at O'Brien Straatmann Funeral Home in Kearney with the Rev. Dean Pofahl officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Visitation was Monday at the funeral home. Don was born Jan. 3, 1938 in Lexington to Elmer and Anna Mae (Smith) McKee. He grew up in the Lexington, Overton and Elm Creek area. He received his education in Elm Creek. He was married to Sharon Bowie in Elm Creek on May 25, 1957. He graduated from Kearney State College in 1961 with a B.S. in Science. He attended graduate school at the University of Oklahoma and Kansas State. He lived in various communities including Elm Creek, Eddyville, Alma, Holbrook and Phillipsburg, Kan., where he taught in various school districts. He taught high school for 33 years. He also farmed and was involved in ranching and real estate. Survivors include his wife of Elm Creek; son, Mack McKee of Sturgis, S.D.; daughters, Deborah (Dale) Penny of Elm Creek, Cindi (Tom) Brestel of Holdrege, Shelly McKee of Avon, Ind., and Trudy (Craig) Carter of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Angela Nunn of Kearney, Megan (Josh) Burkle of Holdrege, Remmington Penny of Elm Creek, Emily Brestel of Lincoln, Jessica (Mark) Freeman of Sturgis, Blake McKee of US Army stationed in Germany, Alexis Carter of Wichita and great-grandchildren Rhiannon Freeman of Sturgis and Kaiya Ellen Burkle of Holdrege. He is also survived by an aunt, Gail Magnuson of Lexington. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Carrie Penny.
