Mein, age 62 of Brady, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, surrounded by her family, at her home at Jeffrey Lake, south of Brady. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg with Father Don O’Brien as celebrant. Cremation will follow at a later date. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Church in Gothenburg with a Rosary starting at 7 p.m. Gwen was born July 6, 1948 at Algona, Iowa to Lee and Marjorie (Meyer) Struthers the oldest of six children. She graduated from Central High School at Sioux City, Iowa in 1966. Following high school, Gwen attended Wayne State College where she attained a bachelor’s degree in education with a minor in business. On April 1, 1970, she married Tom Mein at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple moved frequently, due to career progression, making homes in Early, Iowa, Crete, Wall Lake, Iowa, Lincoln, Elkhart, Stockton, Mo., and Galion, Ohio until moving to Liberal, Kan., for 16 years before permanently moving to their summer cabin at Jeffrey Lake in Brady in 2006. Their union was blessed with three children, Casey, Amy and Andrea. Gwen served as a teacher and coach in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska for many years. Following a successful surgery to remove a brain tumor in 1993, Gwen lived her life to the fullest, enjoying every blessed moment that she had with her family. Her battles with cancer throughout the years made her a person who was strong in faith and love. In most recent years, Gwen was a member of Our lady Of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg; she had previously served as a lector and Communion minister at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Liberal, Kan. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Penny Watchers Club and was a Mary Kay Consultant. Gwen was an avid golfer, and was the Ladies Golf Association Champion in Liberal in 1990 and 1992. Survivors include her husband, Tom Mein of Brady; son, Casey (Nadine) Mein of Liberal, Kan.; two daughters, Amy (Rod) Kutemeier and Andrea (Matthew) Pritchard all of Lawrence, Kan.; parents, Lee (Marjorie) Struthers of Spirit Lake, Iowa; six grandchildren, Corey, Sarah and Ryan Mein, Valarie and Sabrina Kutemeier, and Andrew Pritchard; two sisters, Lori (John) Stivers of Blue Eye, Mo., Kim (Dave) Flom of North Sioux City, Iowa; three brothers, Rod (Wendy) Struthers of Stuart, Fla., Steve (Sue) Struthers of Sioux City, Iowa, Mark (Terry) Struthers of Zimmerman, Minn., and many other relatives and dear friends.
