Pierce, 89, Thornton, Colo., formerly of Eddyville, died May 1, 2009 in Thornton. Graveside services were held May 8, 2009 at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colo. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Thornton; sons, Larry (Le) Pierce, Terry (Nita) Pierce, Tom (Marla) Pierce, all of Denver; grandchildren, Scott, Anna, Sarah, Roxanne and Courtney and four great-grandchildren. Survivors attending the funeral from out of state included Donald’s sisters, Margaret Spies of Merrill, Iowa, Betty Lemmer of Lexington; sisters-in-law Doris Pierce of Hastings, Mrs. Leo Pierce of Payette, Idaho; nephews Homer (Margaret) Pierce of Lexington, Elroy (Connie) Pierce of Eustis and niece Mary Bailey of Lexington. Donald was born Dec. 5, 1919 in Eddyville to Herman and Anna (Smith) Pierce, the seventh of nine children. He joined the CCC as a young man and was stationed at Halsey. He planted trees, thinned timber, made fire lines, built dams and bridges and poisoned prairie dogs on the Dismal River. He returned to Eddyville and drove a truck for his father for a short time, but rejoined the CCC for Camp Dorn at Horse Thief Lake at Custer, S.D. In 1940, he joined the Army and was sent to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He lost his leg in battle there. He married Evelyn Gow from Bellevue in 1944. Three sons were blessed to the union. Don was a barber in Omaha before moving to Denver in 1963 and becoming a dental technician.
