Bill was born Oct. 1, 1911, at Buffalo to John Adolph and Louise (Lange) Schmidt. He was baptized in the First Lutheran Church at Buffalo. He attended school at District 44, Buffalo, and First Lutheran Parochial School, where he completed his education. He was confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in 1926. He stayed on the family farm helping his father through the depression and drought years of the 1930s, working part-time at the Buffalo Store. He spent a short time in California in 1940 and 1941, where he was employed by a building contractor and later by Ralph’s Grocery Stores. He returned to Lexington to help his father on the farm when his brother entered the armed forces. After the end of the war and the death of their father, Bill and his brother bought the family farm and with the help of the Great Plains Conservation Program, developed the level land for irrigation, seeding the rougher land back to grass, built several dams and terraced the steeper slopes. In 1965, their farm was chosen for the Dawson County Conservation Farm of the Year award. In 1952, Bill and long-time friend Hilda Gluenkin were married in Cozad. They joined Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church, where Bill served many years as trustee and usher. They were also members of the Supper Club and Mariners Clubs. Bill retired from active farming in 1976, but continued working part-time on the farm during the summer. Bill and Hilda moved to Lexington in 1981, when the Natural Resources District built a dam on the Buffalo Creek, which ran through their farm. Survivors include two daughters, Liane Schmidt of Lincoln, and Lisa (Bruce) Wolfe of Lincoln; two granddaughters, Angel and Danielle Schmidt of Lincoln; one great-granddaughter Harminy Grace Schmidt of Lincoln; two step-grandsons, Joshua and Jacob Wolfe of Lincoln; two sisters, Edna Kopf of Lexington, and Alice (Gerry) Kopf of Fulton, Ill.; along with 15 nieces and nephews.
