Funeral services will be 11a.m., Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Kearney Church of Christ, 25th and Ave. C. Eddie Lee and Jay Towell will officiate. The Nebraska National Guard Honors Team in conjunction with the American Legion Post 41 of Sumner will conduct military honors at the Sumner Cemetery at 2 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Survivors include stepson, Drew (Carol) Arnold of Sumner; stepdaughter, Linda (Ronald) Bentley of Miller and step-grandson, Jason (Patricia) Lacoss-Arnold and their children, Wisteria and Junia of St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and step daughter-in-law, Mary Arnold. He was born in rural Sumner on Aug. 6, 1915 to Faithful and Cora (Simpson) Shadley. He attended Victory Hill School. When he was 14, the family moved to their own farm near Sumner. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1933 at the head of his class. He entered the Army July 12, 1941 and served in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge Dec. 23, 1945, he worked at different jobs in Oregon and Idaho before returning to the family farm. He farmed there his entire life. He was married to Doris (Roper) Arnold on Oct. 15, 1974 in Kearney. Doris died on May 29, 1998. He was a member of the Kearney Church of Christ, where he was baptized on Jan. 27, 1980, the American Legion, the Thistle Masonic Lodge in Lexington and the Sumner Saddle Club. He was a regular blood donor, and for many years he served on the Sumner School Board, the Sumner Election Board, and the Miller Volunteer Fire Department.
