Memorial Services for Larry H. White, Sr. will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Cathi Braasch, officiating. There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Larry’s wish for cremation. Private inurnment will be in the Elwood Cemetery at Elwood prior to the memorial service. Larry was born May 13, 1944 on the family farm near Elwood in Gosper County, the son of Howard William and Betty Muriel (Lawhead) White. He received his education from Lexington Public Schools. Following his education, he was employed at the Lexington Mill and Elevator for 18 years. On June 22, 1963 he was united in marriage to Irene L. Chavez and to this union three children were born: Larry Jr., Randy and Carla. The family made their home east of Lexington, where Larry enjoyed raising hogs and cows together with his brother, Roland. He also enjoyed working out in his shop with his brother, Carl. Larry also ran a swather, cutting hay for several years. Later in years, he worked in maintenance for the Comfort Inn, the Super 8 Motel and the Days, Inn all in Lexington. On June 4, 2008, Larry was diagnosed with colon cancer and shortly thereafter Larry retired and the couple moved to Bertrand to be near family. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Irene of Bertrand; three children, Larry H. (Cheryl) White, Jr., Randy D. White of Smithfield, all of Smithfield and Carla (T.J.) Wilcox of Holdrege; his mother, Betty White of Kearney; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carl (Beverly) White of Overton, Roland (Marlene) White of Bertrand and Nodle White of Kearney; three sisters, Pamela Lee of Overton, Ronda K. (David ) Cowell of Chloride, Ariz., and Glenda J. (Paul) DeBarge of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard W. White and his wife, Clara Mae; one brother, Lum Ray White at 12 years old; stepfather, Lum White, Sr., and one granddaughter, Latasha Star White.
