Ponca has a population of perhaps 800 souls, at least two thirds of whom have located here since the completion of the Covington, Columbus & Black Hills Railway to this point, over two years ago. Here is the present western terminal of this line. Mercantile enterprizes, religious and educational institutions, and the various secret orders have their usual representation here. Many very prominent gentle- men live here, and to say that the city is the better because of their presence is to reiterate an established fact. Mr. Nathan S. Potter, of this city, has been singularly fortunate in receiving the appointment as Indian Agent at Ft. Peck, Montana, for all of which much credit is due Nebraska's delegation in Congress. All agree in pronouncing Mr. P.'s appointment a most fitting tribute to a true, consistant gentleman, and a friend to Nebraska's better interests. Judge Barnes, assisted by Judge Savage, of Omaha, held an eminently successful term of court here last w week, but to the credit of Dixon County's citizens and the able Judges, the term was a brief one. Judge Barnes has just returned from Cedar County, where too, he has completed a very excellent season at court. Every Judge B. is giving the completest satisfaction, and all unite in praise of him.
