Chicago Tribune Wed Nov 17, 1880 November 1880
A coal bed has been discovered near Ponca, Neb.,
about twenty-two miles west of Sioux City. The
vein is four-and-a-half feet thick, and abouto
585 feet below the surface. Petroleum was discovered
in the vicinity last week, thirty-five feet
nearer the surface. The discovery is regarded as
important, as the nearest coal-mine to Ponca is
150 miles distant.
