Nebraska Advertiser Thur Aug 4, 1870 August 1870

Matt Miller, for the murder of a Mr. Dunn, in Dixon
county in this State, was hung at Ponca, by the
people of that place, on Saturday the 23d, "without
the benefit of Judge or Jury." Miller made a public
confession of his crime, showing it to be one of
the most cold blooded, cowardly murders, ever known.
Notwithstanding all this, we are free to say that in
our opinion, such a course endangers most seriously
the institutions of our land. "Law and order," should
be the watchword. The Covington News says the people
were afraid of the pardoning power.
