His father, who is a farmer, was born at Mount Carroll; his ancestors came to this country from England, prior to the Revolution. His mother was born at Mount Carroll, and died at Mount Carroll, Illinois in 1928. Dr. Ashby was active in basketball, baseball, and track during his school days. He was admitted to the practice of medicine at Chicago Homeopathic Medical College Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, where he was elected to membership in Pi Upsilon Rho Fraternity. He was a member of the medical firm, Drs. Ashby & Ashby at Fairmont, until 1924, since which time he has practiced medicine alone. At present, he is examining physician for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad there. A Republican, he has served as county chairman of various political committees in Fillmore County. He is a member of the school board, Commercial Club, and the following professional organizations: American Medical Association; Nebraska State Medical Society; American Association of Railroad Surgeons. He is a 32nd degree Mason member of the Shrine and Sesostris Temple, Lincoln, Nebraska, also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. During the World War he served as first lieutenant of the Medical Corps, Fort Riley, Kansas, and captain of the Reserves, Camp Devens, Massachusetts. He was commanding hospital officer at Scituate Proving Grounds, Scituate, Massachusetts, for three months. He is now a member of the American Legion. His favorite sport is baseball, and his hobby is overseeing his farms. Dr. Ashby was married at Independence, Missouri, to Gertrude Ferg, October 29, 1918. Mrs. Ashby, who was a laboratory technician for the City of Topeka, Kansas, before her marriage, was born at Hepler, Kansas, September 20, 1894. Mrs. Ashby was graduated from the Kansas University in 1917. She was instructor at Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kansas. To them were born two children: Charles Ferg, February 9, 1920; and Sherman Francis, April 12, 1928. Residence: Fairmont.
