He was born at Franklin, Nebraska, April 15, 1881, the son of Caroline (Helfferich) and Ernst Arnold, the latter a farmer who served as the first sheriff of Franklin County, was county treasurer, 1908-12, and acted as county judge in the early history of the state. Ernst Arnold was born in Germany, March 2, 1848, came to America in 1870, and the following year homesteaded in Nebraska. Caroline (Helfferich) Arnold was born in France, November 11, 1850, arrived in this country in 1872, and in 1873 moved to Nebraska. Mr. Arnold was graduated from the Franklin High School in 1898, attended the Lincoln Business College, was graduated in 1900, and took a short course in an agricultural college at the State University. He served as deputy county treasurer, 1908-12, was secretary of the County Democratic Committee for a number of years, and is now treasurer of the latter organization. He is cashier of the People's Bank at Upland, holds membership in the Commercial Club there, and is treasurer of the Upland Red Cross, president of the 3rd Nebraska Regional Clearing House Association. During the late war Mr. Arnold acted in the capacity of legal advisor, and was prominent in all activities pertaining to home war work. He is a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Tehama Temple of the Shrine, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. His marriage to Bessie Gertrude Barber was solemnized at Bloomington, Nebraska, October 19, 1910; she was born at Bloomington, May 9, 1882. They have two children: Ernst, III, born January 13, 1913, and Barbara Jean, February 11, 1914, a member of the Upland High School. Residence: Upland.
