Evans, 82 of Elwood died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 at the Elwood Care Center. Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Elwood with Pastor Linda Newman, officiating. Viewing and visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 22, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at First Christian Church, in Elwood, with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Interment will be at the Elwood Cemetery in Elwood. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly (Mike) Dyer of Crawford; sons, Dennis (Kay) Evans and Norman (Cynthia) Evans, both of Elwood; Terry (Marlene) Evans of Smithfield; Kelly (Mary) Evans of Sublette, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; Samantha Dyer, Kelly Dyer, Amber Beam, Jamie Evans, Melissa Franzen, Melinda Riedel, Christopher Evans, Anthony Evans, Nick Evans, Bethany Evans, McKenzie Evans, seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Gail Willson, of Kearney She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter and two brothers, Jack and Dale McKenzie. She was born Nov. 21, 1926 in rural Gosper County to Oren & Inez (Whisler) McKenzie. She attended rural grade school north of Elwood, then attended and graduated from Elwood High School in 1944. After graduating from High School, she taught school for one year, and then worked as a telephone operator in Lexington until she married in 1949. On Jan. 16, 1949 she married Bill Evans at the First Christian Church in Elwood. To this union six children were born Dennis, Beverly, Terry, Norman, Harriet and Kelly. Infant daughter Harriet died on Sept. 25, 1962 at the age of 15 months after a yearlong battle with cancer. Iris was a life long member of the First Christian Church of Elwood, and was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship; she also was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for many years. She worked at home raising her family and enjoyed calling in the Brace news for the Elwood Bulletin. On Jan. 16, 1999, Iris and Bill celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Her husband Bill died on Feb. 20, 1999.
