Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with Pastor Jeff Ernstmeyer officiating. Burial is at the Salem Cemetery southwest of Elwood. Survivors include his daughter, Coleen (Bob) Simmons, of Foster City, Calif.; son, Douglas (Carol) Gruber; two grandchildren, Danny Gruber and Gail (Ray) Ball, all of Elwood and a sister, Elsie Hofman, of Imperial. George was preceded in death by his wife, Anna in 2003; his parents, Emil and Maria and brothers, Oscar and Leonard. George was born April 24, 1911 in Elwood to Emil and Maria (Marquardt) Gruber, the first of four children. He attended rural school in Elwood and farmed with his father, a German immigrant. On Oct. 29, 1933, he married Anna Marie Maahs, the daughter of Carl and Kate (Kalthoff) Maahs, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple resided and farmed on the family homestead south of Elwood where George was born. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and an avid snake hunter.
