There will be a private family service and her passing will be celebrated as she lived… surrounded by her family. Vi was born on a farm near Elwood on Feb. 10, 1921, the second child of Andrew and Irene (Ballheim) Christensen. Vi and her sister Helena’s idyllic childhoods were similar to many rural families. The season dictated the flow of work and play. Vi graduated from Elwood High School in 1937; the largest graduating class to date. She married Arnold “Swede” Westerlin on Feb. 1, 1948 and the growing family moved to California in 1952, four small children, Dennis, twins Connie and Don E. and the youngest, Dan. A fifth child, Sondra “Sonnie” was added to the family in 1957. Survivors include her children, Dennis Westerlin of Nacogdoches, Texas, Connie (Allen) Schmeeckle of Elwood, Don E. Westerlin of Anchorage, Alaska, Dan (Kathy) Westerlin of Alameda, Calif.; sister, Helena DeFord of Newark, Del.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Vi was preceded in death by her parents, her husband “Swede,” daughter, Sonnie Halker, two daughters-in-law, Anne and Gwynne Westerlin.
