He is the son of Isaac Newton and Amanda Jane (Shultz) Augustine, the former a Lutheran minister who at one time published the Western Independent Lutheran. Isaac Newton Augustine was born at Petersburg, Pennsylvania, February 9, 1833, and died at Grand Island, on July 2, 1921. His wife, Amanda Jane, was born at Salisbury, Pennsylvania, October 16, 1835, and died at Grand Island, March 18, 1915. A true minister’s wife, she was helpful to him in his work. She was of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. Irving Milton Augustine was graduated from high school at Hebron, Nebraska, in the 1880’s, and attended the University of Nebraska one semester. On November 12, 1885, he was married to Alice Tabitha Fitzsimons, at Carleton, Nebraska. Mrs. Augustine, who is of Irish descent, was born at Mineral Point, Wisconsin, July 3, 1861. To this union five children were born: Ernest Webster, born on September 13, 1886, who married Pernelia Spethman; Olive Dell, born December 7, 1887, unmarried; Raymond Lloyd, born January 17, 1890, who died September 5, 1898; Howard Milton, born January 14, 1892, who married Dorothy Lynn; and Irving DelMar, born November 29, 1897, who married Ruth M. Mayer. A staunch Democrat, Mr. Augustine was for a number of years the publisher of the Grand Island Free Press and the Daily Republican, both Democratic, and strong in their support of Democratic principles. Now retired, Mr. Augustine formerly published the Bruning Enterprise, the Doniphan Eagle, the Free Press and the Daily Republican. Upon retiring from the newspaper field Mr. Augustine, with his son, Ernest, founded the Augustine Company, a co-partnership between father and sons, and long recognized as among the strongest and most successful institutions of its kind in the state. He is, in addition to his holdings in the Augustine Company, a stockholder in the Commercial Bank and Building and Loan Association of Grand Island. Affiliated with St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, for his fidelity and long efficient service, the congregation elected him as a life member of its council. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Hall County Historical Association, the Ancient Order of United Workmen and The Nebraskana Society. His social club is the Riverside Golf Club, and his favorite sports are golf and fishing. The author of several unpublished manuscripts, he devotes much of his leisure time to writing and expects to publish his works. Residence: Grand Island.
