This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Susanne Milbourn. milbourn@megavision.com Surveyed 27 September, 2000. ================================================================== Location: This cemetery is located 1/2 mile west of the junction of Yutan Rd and 17th Ave. It is most easily accessed by taking Highway 92 five miles west of Farwell, NE; turn north at Yutan Rd and take the gravel road four miles until you reach 17th Ave; turn left again. The cemetery is associated with the former Catholic Church, Our Lady of Mt Carmel, which was established in 1882. Although the church building remains, nestled in the valley west of the cemetery, it was closed in 1987. Many of the older tombstones in the cemetery are inscribed in Polish, reflecting the heritage of the area's first residents. Unfortunately, this surveyor is not familiar with the Polish language so in many cases only the deceased's name, along with the years of birth and death, are included here. While I was doing the survey, an elderly man came to visit. After explaining my purpose, he told me that the western portion of the cemetery is known as the "diphtheria cemetery" and that many graves there are unmarked. An excellent write-up on the diptheria epidemic in 1892 and its impact on the Paplin area can be found in "Howard County, the First 100 Years," by Ellen Keichel Partsch, 1973. Bereaved families mentioned include: Baggers / Baker; Chelewsi; Nowaks; Klein; Roszxnialski; and Kowalski. The number of deaths in that epidemic in Howard County alone must have been a staggering total. Additional information about the Paplin/Mt Carmel community can be found in "Entering Howard County: A History of the People and the Land of Howard County, Nebraska," by Marion Bahensky and Ron W Sack, 2000. It includes pictures of the interior of the church and the area of the cemetery dedicated to the victims of the diphtheria epidemic of 1892-93. My sincere thanks to Albert for enlightening me about this tragic legacy. This list is presented in the order read--starting in the southwest corner, and walking the rows north and south.
