He was born in Athens County, Ohio, January 13, 1870, the son of Daniel Axtell and Hester Delilah (Clark) Axtell. His father, who was a farmer, was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, May 30, 1846, and died at Fairbury, July 11, 1914; his French and English ancestors came to America in the early history of the country and served in the Revolution; he was a soldier in the Civil War. His mother, was born in Athens County, Ohio, March 1, 1848, and died at Fairbury, August 29, 1915; her English ancestors settled in Virginia, and later moved to Tennessee and Ohio. Mr. Axtell attended rural school, was a student in the Fairbury High School, and was graduated from the Beatrice Business College. A Republican, he has taken a prominent part in political affairs in Nebraska for many years. In 1917, 1919, and 1921, he served as a member of the Nebraska legislature, and at this time he is senator from the 17th district. He has taught in the public schools of Nebraska, has been engaged in farming for the past 30 years, and is also a real estate and insurance man. He is affiliated with the Methodist Church and holds membership in The Nebraskana Society. His marriage to Olive Shepherd was solemnized at Fairbury, June 2, 1897. Mrs. Axtell, who was a teacher before her marriage, was born in Iowa, January 6, 1876. They have one son, Edwin, born January 19, 1912, who was a student at Wesleyan College and later attended the University of Nebraska. Mr. Axtell is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is a Knight Templar, Scottish Rite Mason, and Shriner. He was a member of the school board at one time and now holds membership in the Chamber of Commerce and the Farmers Union. His favorite sport is golfing. Residence: Fairbury.
