Zetterman, 73, of Lincoln, formerly a Lexington teacher, died June 8, 2010 at his home from complications of a brain aneurysm. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 1 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 8550 Pioneers Blvd. in Lincoln with Pastors John Lacey and Paul Lepard officiating. Visitation with family was Friday at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home. Lowell was born Aug. 27, 1936 in Ong to Verlie and Maurine Zetterman. He grew up on the family farm at Shickley, attending rural School District No. 52 through the eighth grade. He graduated from Shickley High School in 1954, then attended Doane College, graduating in 1958 with a degree in history. He began teaching social studies at Lexington Junior High School that same fall, while also coaching junior high football, basketball and track, as well as timing and announcing high school athletic events. In 1966 he took a year’s leave of absence to attend Ohio State University on a NEDA Scholarship, where he received his master of art’s degree in education with an emphasis on urban geography. Upon his return to Lexington the following year, he resumed his duties with Lexington Public Schools. In 1973, he coached Lex’s Class B Girl’s Track Team to a state championship, where they double scored on competition, finishing the year undefeated. He was a member of the Lexington Planning Commission for many years, serving as the chairman for eight years. Lowell was elected President of Nebraska Social Studies Organization in early 1970s, was elected President of NSEA District 4 in 1975, elected President-elect of NSEA in 1976 and served as President from 1977-78. When his term ended in the fall of 1978, he accepted a position as UniServ Director for NSEA, which he held until his retirement in 1999. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, sports enthusiast, debater and a passionate advocate for teachers. Survivors include his wife, Diane Zetterman of Lincoln; daughter, Suzan (Kevin) Culver of Owensboro, Ky.; son, Stuart (Kim) Zetterman of Lincoln; mother, Maurine Zetterman of Geneva; stepdaughter, Lynn (Ryan) Fitzgerald of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Zachary and Brady Culver, Colton and Shea Zetterman and Cora Fitzgerald; brother, Rowen (Joanie) Zetterman of Omaha; nephews, David Zetterman, Justin (Julie) Zetterman and Corey (Jolene) Zetterman, as well as six great-nieces and great-nephews.
