Hoaland--a western Nebraska pioneer and a friend of Platte Valley irrigation who missed no opportunity to protect irrigation interests of the farmer--is gone. His death Sunday left this part of the state without an attorney who has become widely known as a fighter-- a fighter for what he believed was right, or in his attorney's mind, what was right for his clients. It is true that he was employed by his clients, but there are few attorneys who go into a courtroom with the same battling determination to win. Walter Hoagland was a fighter. The men who knew him closest may have been opposed to his views on a case, but each and everyone of them admired his fighting spirit. To him law was his life. He spent little time in relaxation, except for civic and lodge affairs. His job was in law, and almost every court in the state had heard his voice. During his lifetime, he had taken time out to serve three terms in the state legislature, and to take an active part in the Odd Fellows lodge and to serve in civic affais. His was one of the oldest families of this area, and he spent a lifetime among those with whom he was reared. Many residents of North Platte will remember Walter Hoagland, but those who will remmember him best are the farmers of the Plate Valley whose irrigation rights are preserved because he fought for them. They will remember Hoagland as a fighter--a fighter for their interests.
