HOAGLAND Joseph S. Hoagland was born at Jersey City, New Jersey, February 10, 1847. He was one of five brothers and six sisters born to William V.F. Hoagland, all of whom survive except one brother and two sisters. The brothers and sisters surviving are Henry V. Hoagland, Mrs. Elizabeth Loughridge, Mrs. Nettie Bagley and Miss Susan Hoagland all of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Sarah Tunnell of Verdun, Ill., William Hoagland of Central City, Neb., and James William Hoagland of Swan, Holt county, Nebraska. In an early day the Hoagland family moved to Verdon, Ill, and were pioneer settlers of that state. On December 28, 1869, Joseph S. Hoagland was married to Marie Waples at Rigdly, Illinois, and in 1873 moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he lived until 1884. At that time he became president of the Nebraska Soldiers Colony which organized Logan county, Nebraska; and moved to North Platte, Nebraska with his family where he has resided ever since. He was the second sheriff of Lancaster county following sheriff McClay in 1878. At one time he was engaged in the lumber business in Lincoln with is brother Henry V. Hoagland, and was later admitted to the bar of Lancaster county where he practiced law until he went to North Platte. Since his residence in western Nebraska, he has been one of the leaders of the bar, and was state senator from western Nebraska in 1875. He has been identified with the Odd Fellows Fraternity for more than forty years, and was past patriarch of the grand encampment of the order, and for twenty years represented the Nebraska, jurisdiction in the sovereign grand lodge. He was chairman of the board of trustees of the Odd Fellows home at York for many years and in a large way he has been responsible for the growth of the Odd Fellows fraternity in this state. He volunteered in the Civil war when he was eighteen years of age, and has been prominently identified with the Grand Army of the Republic in this state. He was department commander in 1918. During the early days of Lincoln, he was identified with the old citizens of Lincoln in the growth of the city, and is remembered by many of the old settlers for his active life and energy in promoting the welfare of the state. Mr. Joseph S. Hoagland died at his home at North Platte, Neb., July 31, 1920 at the age of seventy-three years. Funeral services were held under the auspices of the Odd Fellows and Grand Army at Lincoln, August 3, 1920. He was buried in the Hoagland famly lot in Wyuka cemetery. Many of the Grand Lodge officers and Rebecca Assembly officers of the Odd Fellows were present, and assisted in the burial of one of our pioneer citizens. Mr. Hoagland was an active member of the Episcopal church. Mr. Hoagland leaves surviving him his widow, Marie L. Hoagland and his two sons, State Senator Walter V. Hoagland and Arthur B. NORTH PLATTE, July 31-- Attorney James S. Hoagland, seventy-three years old, died at his home in this city at 1:35 p.m. Saturday after a long and lingering illness resulting from ptomaine poisoning caught while making an auto trip from Florida. The attorney had practiced law here since 1884 and was well-known thruout the state. Mr. Hoagland was born February 10, 1847. in Illinois, where he spent his early life. He married Married Marie Waples, and was later called to his country's service in the civil war. Following the war, Mr. and Mrs. Hoagland went to Nebraska, locating in Lincoln, where Mr. Hoagland was sheriff of Lancaster county for several years. He later moved to North Platte where he became an attorney, very well liked by his townspeople. The attorney was associated with the Odd Fellows and served in the grand lodge for twenty-one years. Mr. and Mrs. Hoagland spent their golden wedding anniversary in St. Cloud, Florida, December 28, 1919. Besides his wife Mr. Hoagland leaves two sons: A. B. Hoagland of the Fidelity Reserve company, and attorney W. V. Hoagland, who as been a senator, both of North Platte. He leaves two sisters: Mrs. H. H. Loughbridge and Mrs. George W. Bagley, and a brother, Henry V. Hoagland, all of Lincoln. Burial will be at Lincoln. Mr. Hoagland was department commander of the Grand Army of the state and was a prominent Odd Fellows official.
