C. Keith, one of the pioneers of Western Nebraska, died at his home in the First ward Friday afternoon from Bright's disease, a malady with which he had suffered for a number of years. He had been confined to the house for two weeks but only during the last week had he been compelled to remain in his room. Several days before his death local physicians had pronounced his case hopeless and Thursday night a physician was summoned from Omaha but is verdict was the same. Mr. Keith was born in western New York in 1823. While he was still a young man he engaged in the freighting business in the west, his first location being in St. Joseph where he was associated with the Western Stage Co. Later he became one of the superintendents employed by the company and had charge of the stages and freight wagons on several lines. During this interval he made a number of trips through Nebraska and out to Utah on the old California trail. In 1861 Mr. Keith moved from St. Joseph to Topeka where he was still engaged in freighting. Late in the sixties he was offered the management of the Pacific Hotel here. He accepted it and in 1868 brought his family here. He has resided here continuously since then. During the early part of his residence here he took a great many contracts for grading on the line of the Union Pacific and also government contracts. He also engaged in the stock business which business he followed moreor less closely during the balance of his life. His first wife died a few years after he came to North Platte and later in ife he married Miss Cassie Casey who only lived a year after their union. He had but one child, a daughter who married Hon. Wm Neville soon after reaching womanhood but who died about a year after the marriage. Mr. Keith by close attention to business amassed a fortune. Part of it is invested in North Platte in several business blocks, residences and the Pawnee Ranche. The balance of his investments are in San Francisco, Chicago, Topeka, in silver mines in Mexico and property in various other places. At this time it is impossible to make an accurate estimate of the entire amount of property. Mr. Keith is survived by a brother, Walter Keith, and a grandson, Keith Neville, a lad about sixteen years of age, who it is understood is his principal heir. The deceased was a maln of quiet habits whose principle enjoyment in life in later years has been the companionship of his grandson to whom he was very devotedly attached. He was well known throughout the state and had hosts of warm friends to whom his death brings a sense of irrepairable loss. The funeral was held from the residence Sunday afternoon by Rev. G. A. Beecher. It was largely attended.
