News has been received of the death of Hon. John Taffe, an ex-member of Congress from Nebraska,a resident of Lincoln in that state. The deceased was born in Indianapolis in 1826, January 30, and was a brother of Hannibal and George Taffe, still living here, and uncle of Al Taffe, the well-known turnkey at the Central station. Adopting the profession of the law, Mr. Taffe removed to Illinois, whence after a brief stay, he pushed on to Nebraska, then a territory, reaching there in 1856. He soon took an active part in politics and served in the territorial legislature and council, being president of the latter fro 1858 to 1861. The next year Mr. Taffe raised a regiment of cavalry for Indian service, and was made major. In that capacity he fought in the battle of White Stone Hills in 1863. The term of service expiring Taffe returned to civil life, being elected to congress in 1866, 1868 and 1870. In the last term he served as chairman of the committee on territories. In 1875 he was appointed as secretary of the territory of Colorado. Next year its admission as a state legislated him out, and he was afterward appointed receiver of public moneys at North Platte, the last public position that he held. He was a prominent citizen, having represented Nebraska in Congress for three terms, from 1866 to 1872. At the time of his death he was Receiver of the United States Land Office at North Platte, which position he had held for several years. He was born in Indianapolis in 1827. Fredonia Democrat (Fredonia, KS) Fri Mar 21, 1884 The death of John Taffe, a receiver of the land-office at North Platte, who represented Nebraska in Congress for three terms, occurred a few days ago. He was fifty- seven years of age. New York Times Sat Mar 15, 1884 pg 4 THE HON. JOHN TAFFE A dispatch from Omaha yesterday announced the death at North Platte, Neb., of the Hon. John Taffe, who represented Nebraska in the Fortieth, Forty-first, and Forty-second Congresses. Mr. Taff was born in Indianapolis, Ind. Jan 30, 1827. He received a classical education and became a lawyer. He removed to Nebraska in 1856, and was elected to the Territorial Legislature in 1858 and 1859. He was chosen a delegate to the Council in 1860, and was made its President in the Winter of 1861. Mr. Taffe raised a regiment of cavalry from the Territorial militia to repulse the Indians in their uprising in 1862. He was commissioned Major, and led the attacking party in the battle of White Stone Hills in 1863. He was elected a Representative in Congress in 1866, when Nebraska was made a State, and was re-elected for the two succeeding terms. In 1875 he was appointed Secretary of Colorado.
