Neville Dies at 75 Demo Served From '17-'19 North Platte-- Former Nebraska Gov. Keith Neville, 75, died here Friday, one week after undergoing surgery in a North Platte hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Episcopal Church of Our Savior, the Rev. Seward H. Bean officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery. Mr. Neville, a Democrat, was governor of Nebraska from 1917-1919. He was defeated when seeking the office again in 1940. "Keith Neville has been a long-time leader on the Nebraska scene." Gov. Ralph Brooks said in tribute. "Nebraska salutes one of it's great citizens and moves him to a high place among our departed leaders." Brooks said. M. Neville was known as "Boy Governor" during his term. He was 33 when he took office. Continued on Page 2 Page 2 Continued From Page 1 Neville Was Known as Boy Governor In 1954 Mr. Neville accepted a draft movement for the Senate primary bid, although he had not held office for years. Lost to Curtis He campaigned on a platform favoring continued farm price supports and curtailing foreign aid, and was defeated in the general election by Sen. Carl Curtis. He was a keynoter for the Democratic Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in 1954. He was Nebraska's state National Recovery Act director during the depression days. He had been chairman of the board of North Platte's First National Bank since 1951, previously serving as president. He had been a member of the board of directors since 1910. He was a North Platte City councilman and a member of the school board. Long active in public power circles, Mr. Neville opposed moves to turn rural electrification and publicly owned hydro-electric districts over to private power interests. A leader in power and irrigation development in the Platte Valley, he served for two years as director of Platte Valley Public Power and Irrigation District. He had served as chairman of the Nebraska Democratic State Committee and was a former Democratic National committeeman. Congressman's Son He was the son of William Neville, one of the early settlers and ranchmen of western Nebraska and former congressman from the old 6th Nebaska Congessional Dist. Mr. Neville was educated at St. John's Academy and St. John's College at Annapolis, Md., from which he was graduated in 1905 with a bachelor of arts degree. In 1906 he took over the management of the family ranch and farms, and engaged in banking. An ardent sportsman, he was at one time president of the State Sportsmen's Assn., and the Lincoln County Wild Life Assn. Mr. Neville had been a member of the Lincoln Journal's Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame selections committee since it's beginning in 1951. Over a long span of time, the North Platte high school football team was his principal hobby to which he devoted untold hours in the service of "his boys." Head Coach He served as head coach of the football team from 1905 to 1915 and from 1919 to 1924, thus holding the reigns for 17 years. His teams were unbeaten and untied in 1911, 1912, 1915 and 1921 and unbeaten but tied in 1905 and 1910. In 1921 his team swept all competition for the state high school football championship. 50 Year Pin Mr. and Mrs. Neville celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Oct 21, 1958 and this year Mr. Neville receied his 50-year pin in the Masonic lodge. He was chairman of the Nebraska Advertising Commission and a member of the Pershing Memorial Assn. In 1929, he was given an award by the North Platte Rotary Club for outstanding performance in civic leadership. He was a Mason, Shriner, Odd Fellow and an Elk, as well as a member of the North Platte Chamber of Commerce. He served two terms as Chamber president. Survivors In 1917 he was elected colonel of the 7th Nebaska Infantry but was never called into service. He was an honorary member of the United Spanish-American War veterans. Survivors include his wife, Mary; daughters, Mrs. W. D. Newberry, Mrs. Don Robertson, Mrs. Fred Sieman and Mrs. Roy Bystrom, all of North Platte.
