(Volk) Grant, 94, of Battle Creek, died Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Tilden Community Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Snow officiating. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the church under the direction of Steffen Mortuary. Helen was born south of Battle Creek on Sept. 17, 1916, to John C and Amelia (Schmidt) Volk and was baptized Oct. 29, 1916 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Madison, and confirmed her faith May 11, 1930 at St Peter’s (Heights) Lutheran Church. She attended Fairview District 22 and Heights Lutheran School and was a graduate of Battle Creek High School with the class of 1934. On June 21, 1936 at St Peter’s (Heights) Lutheran Church, Helen Volk and Willis Grant exchanged wedding vows. The couple lived south of Meadow Grove for 25 years, then moved to Battle Creek in 1961. To this union one son, Richard, and one daughter, Brenda were born. Helen is survived by her son, Richard (Carol) of Meadow Grove; daughter, Brenda (Warren) Bierman of Lexington; brothers, John Volk, Jim (Stella) Volk, Bob (Jeanette) Volk; a sister, Betty Bierman; a sister-in-law, Josephine Volk; grandchildren, Bruce (Karen) Grant, Kim (Troy) McCain, Konnie (Lane) McKown, Tammy (Tim) Gregerson, Wendy (Doug) Dockweiler, Debra (Daniel) Vahle, Sheri Bierman and great-grandchildren, Michala, Layton and Kalen Dockweiler, Garret and Katheryn Gregerson, Tucker and Noah Vahle, Jason, Jeremy, and Kristen Grant, Jake and Cody McCain, Grant and Jonathan McKown. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Willis Grant in 1985 and a brother, Kenneth.
