A, First Nebraska Veteran Cavalry. William was born 19 March, 1843, in Massillon, Stark county, Ohio, to Stephen and Isabella (MAPPS) POWELL. His family later moved to Illinois, then to Iowa, and finally on into Johnson county, Iowa, when William was about 14 years old. William later settled in Syracuse, Otoe county, Nebraska. William POWELL's Pension record was obtained from the National Archives, Pension #868148: DECLARATION FOR INVALID PENSION Under the Acts of June 27, 1890, and May 9, 1900. State of Nebraska, County of Otoe, ss: On this 31st day of March, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and five, personally appeared before me O. Home a Notary Public within and for the County and State aforesaid William Powell a resident of the Village of Syracuse, County of Otoe, State of Nebraska who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical William Powell who was ENROLLED on the 31st day of August, 1864*, in Priv. in Capt. Lee P. Gillette's Co. "A," First Reg't, Nebraska Cav. Vet. Vol. in the service of the United States in the War of Rebellion, and served at least ninety days, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Omaha, Nebraska, on the 1st day of July, 1866. That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That he is 62 years of age, having been born on the 19th day of March, 1843. That he is unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of age. *Promoted to Corporal May 28th 1866. That he claims the benefit of Order 78, dated March 15th, 1904; being past 62 years of age. That said disabilities are not due to his vicious habits, and are to the best of his knowledge and belief permanent. That he has never applied for pension under application No. [blank] That he is a pensioner under Certificate No. [blank] That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension-roll of the United States under the provisions of the act of June 27, 1890, as amended by act of May 9, 1900. He hereby appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, Jas. W. Eaton of Syracuse, Nebraska, his true and lawful attorney to prosecute this claim, the fee to be TEN DOLLARS, as prescribed by law. State of Nebraska, County of Otoe, ss: On this 15th day of Febr., 1919, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public within and for the County and State aforesaid, Aurilla Powell, who, being duly sworn by me according to law, declares that she is 65 years of age and that she was born Aug. 2, 1853 at Woodville, Ohio. That she is the widow of William Powell, who enlisted August 3, 1864, at Fort Kearney, Nebr. Territory, under the name of William Powell, as a Private, in Co. A First Nebr. Reg. and was honorably discharged July 1, 1866, having served ninety days or more during the CIVIL WAR. That he alsod served [None]. That otherwise than as herein stated said soldier was never employed in the United States service. That she was married to said soldier (or sailor) September 26, 1869, under the name of Aurilla Stanley, at Helena Precinct, Johnson county, Nebr. by John Wilson, Justice of the Peace; that she had never been previously married; that he had never been previously married and that neither she nor said soldier (or sailor) was ever married otherwise than as stated above. That said soldier (or sailor) died January 28, 1919, at Syracuse, Nebraska; that she was not divorced from him; and that she has not remarried since his death. That the following are the ONLY children of the soldier (or sailor) who are NOW living and under sixteen years of age, namely: None. That she has never heretofore applied for pension, the number of her former claim being [blank]; that said soldier (or sailor) was a pensioner, the number of his pension certificate being #1108505. That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the ACT OF APRIL 19, 1908, as amended by the ACT OF SEPTEMBER 8, 1916. 1 F.
