Those who would like to join his family in honoring this proud American are invited to give him one last salute at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with Pastor J.C. Calhoun officiating. Inurnment will be a private matter at the Orleans Cemetery at Orleans. He was born Oct. 24, 1920, at Atlanta to Joseph D. and Ami M. (Trollope) Leach. Paige, as he was known to most, grew up and helped on the family farm. At age 19, he began a job with the Civilian Conservation Corps. This was to help his parents survive the plight of the depression. A few years later, he met and married Loraine G. Isaacson. They had two children, Gerald (Jerry) and Sharon K. When the children were young, Paige proudly served his country on the Navy transport ship the George Clymer, which was commissioned to the South Pacific Theater; this then became his home. Paige was assigned to man an anti-aircraft flak cannon while protecting his ship from enemy gunfire and kamikaze pilots. He also had the ominous task of transporting soldiers and supplies to enemy territory while navigating a Higgins boat (PA-27). Paige saw extensive action during his time in the service. A few months after the surrender of Japan, he received an honorable discharge. Paige later met and married his wife of 55 years, Ila Irene Dobberstein of Kearney. They had two children, Larry and Laurie. Most of Paige’s adult life was spent working for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He always had a love of trains. Later he would work for the State of Nebraska, retiring after 22 years of service. Paige and Irene loved to travel; they visited their daughter in Arizona many times. While on the road, they never met a stranger. Paige was always friendly and would eagerly swap stories. They had many friends from all over the country and at Christmastime their mailbox was never empty; it was filled with love from all over. He spent his retirement years with his wife in Cozad to be close to his son, Larry. The last year of his life, residing in the Bertrand Nursing Home, where he went home to meet Jesus on May 11, 2010. Paige is survived by his wife; four children; one brother; three sisters; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington was in charge of arrangements.
