Published by Centennial Book Committee - 1987 Copyright 1987 by Rock County Centennial Book Committee and Rock County Historical Society Ora Vance Harlan Biography Ora Vance Harlan was born to James Evans and Mina Sybrant Harlan in 1894. He was the oldest of 4 children. He spent his entire life in Rock County. Orie was a musician, playing the violin. He loved ranching and working with the animals. He was united in marriage to Margaret Brown on April 26, 1916 at Bassett. Margaret was the daughter of Walter Franklin and Lilly Elizabeth (Dickerson) Brown. Orie and Margaret were the parents of 9 children: Calvin Lyle, Esther May, Elmer leroy, Levi Duane, Neva Arlene, Alta Marie, Violet Loraine, James Otis and Helen Ione. For a number of years Orie and Margaret ran the Sybrant Store and Post Office, started at an early date by the Sybrant brothers. Later, when they no longer ran the store but sill lived in the building, they held weekly dances, with Orie providing part of the music and Margaret providing their family's share of food. Orie passed away March 2, 1968 in the Rock County Hospital and Margaret passed away February 20, 1982 at the Rock County Hospital. Both are buried at the Bassett Memorial Cemetery. (End of File)
