LIKENS J.D. Likens was born in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio October 25, 1837. In 1849 he moved with his fathers family to DeKalb County, Indiana which was then a wilderness and helped to clear his father's farm. At an early age he became a canal boy, working on the Wabash canal in the summer and going to school in the winter. at the age of 19 he apprenticed as a carpenter and worked at his trade until the fall of 1861 when he enlisted in Co. H, 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry of Ft. Wayne. He was slightly wounded at Shilo and severely at Stone River. He married Miss Matilda Walsworth of Auburn, Indiana. He mustered out on November 25, 1865 and resumed his trade for a few years, then went to farming. He came to Rock County in February of 1884 where he located on a farm eight miles northwast of Bassett in the Long Pine Precinct. Mr. Likens as elected to office of County Treasurer in the fall of 1888. Republican Statesman October 8, 1891 FRED N. MORGAN Fred N. Morgan was born in Marion County, Indiana on September 22, 1858. He was educated in Common shools and High chool at Indianappolis. Fred first studied law at the Indianappolis la school and later on read law at Blair, Nebraska where he resided for two years. He located in Newport in the summer of 1885 and was engaged in the real estate business. He was admitted to the bar at Ainsworth on September 7, 1888. (End of File)
