Published by Centennial Book Committee - 1987 Copyright 1987 by Rock County Centennial Book Committee and Rock County Historical Society David Oscar Sybrant Biography David Oscar Sybrant was one of the first pioneers in Rock County, Nebraska. Little would he have realized the beginnings of the large family of descendants, some of whom make their living today on the same lands that he and his children settled in those early years. David Oscar Sybrant was born March 23, 1831 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania to Samuel and Claricy (Hathaway) Sybrant. The name Sybrant was spelled Sybrandt prior to David's line. David was married to Rosella Gilbert, probably in the middle 1850's in Pennsylvania. Rosella became ill and they employed a neighborgirl, Lucretia McFadden, to help care for the children and Rosella. The children loved "Crish", as they called her. On May 20, 1867, Rosella died. Lucretia then returned to her family and David began a struggle to care for five children alone. After a few months in despair over trying the task alone, he took the children to town to put them out for adoption. But he was unable to part with them. He returned and asked Lucretia to be his wife and mother to his children. They were married August 8, 1867. Children of Rosella and David were: Alice, Harriett, Frank (who died at age 20), Caddy ( who also died young) and Estella. During the seventeen years that followed their marriage, ten children were born to David and Lucretia. They were Bessie, Don, Mina, Fred, John, Gerbert, blaine, Newton, Effa and Bert. In the mid-1880's David corresponded with a nephew, Eb Sybrant in Nebraska. The decision was made that David would homestead in Nebraska, get a dwelling established and Lucretia and the children would come later. David arrived in Rock County in July 1886, and homesteaded. In July 1887, 23 year old Estella and 12 year old Fred joined their father. In October, 1887, Lucretia came by train with five of their children. Bessie and her husband, George Wick, and children were to come later, as did Don. Effa and Bert were born in Rock County. David was instrumental in getting a church started in the area of his homestead and also began a school in the area. David also donated 3 acres of land for a cemetery. This is called the Sybrant Cemetery as is still being used as a resting place for many of the people in that part of the county and for the many relatives of David Sybrant. Lucretia Amanda Sybrant was a cheerful and lovable person. She was a good mother to her 10 children and 5 step-children. She was mid-wife for all the local people at that time and attended the births of many babies in the area. Lucretia passed away in January, 1936 at the age of 87. (End of File)
