Despite adverse conditions of the weather, many thousand tons of hay were put up which will find a ready market. Newport still holds her prestige as the greatest hay shipping point in the U.S. During the year population of the town has materially increased. In business all lines have flourished, a state bank, a hardware store, shoe shop, millinery, dressmaker, bakery and saloon having been added to the list of the town's establishments. In sports, Newport took the lead during the season of 1902, being the only town in this section of the state to support a ballteam, the famous Newport Tigers. They won 12 of 15 games played against other local teams. During the year Newport built a telephone line to Mariaville and Hogan's bridge, assissted with a line to Bassett and Springview. February 27, 1903 It is thought that the entire family of Ben Beach of Bassett will have the smallpox. Two more cases have developed. May 22, 1903 Dan Kleckner built a new sidewalk on the north side of his residence this week and now he wants the church people and B.N. Smith to connect up.
