Pont, 85, for more than 50 years a resident of Stanton County, were held Saturday afternoon at the Stanton Congregational Church with Rev. Samuel Cushing in Charge. Mr. Pont died Wednesday morning in a Norfolk hospital after having been in failing health for about two months. Music for the services was furnished by Mrs. R. G. Deardorff, organist, who accompanied the Congregational Men's Octet as they sang, "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "Rock of Ages". Pallbearers were Robert Kingston of Wisner, Harold Dickinson of Lyons, Raymond Wolverton, Reuben Dickinson, Ed Wegner and William Boldt. Interment was in Stanton Cemetery. Samuel R. Pont was born June 30, 1872 at Annawan, Illinois, the third child of Martin and Frances Pont. When he was three years of age the family moved to Lewis, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. On January 21, 1903, he was married to Frances Rachel Matthews at Atlantic, Iowa, and the couple came to Nebraska where they made their home just north of Stanton. This was their home for 40 years. In 1943 they moved to a farm a few miles north and in 1945, moved to town. Mr. Pont was active in Community and church work. He served on the school board of Distgrict 8 for more than 30 years and was a member of the Stanton County Agricultural Society for many years. He was a founding member of the Stanton Farmer's Union and the Co-op Creamery Organization. He was affiliated with an Iowa Odd Fellows Lodge and did not transfer his membership to any local lodge. The Ponts became members of the Congregational Church in 1916 and Mr. Pont served as a deacon for many years, finally being named Deacon Emeritus in 1951. Mr. Pont is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harold Schellbpeper (Hazel) of Pilger and Mrs. Rudolph Bartak (Esther) of Madison; three sons, Edward of St.Loius, Mo., Leonard of Derby, Colo., and Vernon, of Little Falls, Minn.; 16 grandchildren, one of whom, Frances Ann, lived with the Ponts since her birth; nine great grandchildren; and one brother, Russell of Griswold, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1950."
