PREFACE From pioneer days until the present the women of Nebraska have has a very helpful interest in the advancement of education, of the arts, of literature, of religious philanthropy and in social service in all of its phases. Some of them have been women of unusual talent and have a national reputation. To record the achievements of these exceptional women and to make a permanent record of the lives and work of the women who within the state and, in their own communities, have given their service to the common good, is the object of this book. It is not claimed that all the women deserving recognition are included in these pages, no book would be large enough to contain them all; the number has been curtailed, too, by the difficulty which all local historians experience in securing facts about living people. Just why we should need a prospective of years before recording the achievements of men and women who help to make history is enigma. “There is a long list of men and women of genius to whom Fame brings a wreath of finds her poet dead.” If this book helps Nebraska to appreciate her women of today, and their achievements, and if it prove an inspiration to the women of tomorrow, it will not have been written in vain Winona Evans Reeves NAME MAIDEN NAME PAGE ARNOLD, FANNIE 10 ABBOTT, MRS.
