Dale, A.B. (a) [Continued from Vol. X, page 34.] 11. NOBLE5 SAXTON (James4-3-2 George1) was born at Sheffield, Massachusetts, September 17, 1763. While living at Spencertown, New York, he enlisted, March 1, 1778, and served nine months as a private in Captain Joshua Whitney's company in Colonel Alden's Massachusetts regiment. He enlisted again, March 15, 1780, and served nine months as a private in Captain J. Woodward's company of Rangers in the New York troops. (b) Noble Saxton married Rebecca Berry and in 1790 they were living at Monkton, Vermont. About 1793 they removed to Malone, Franklin County, New York, where he died February 14, 1829. (b) A Noble Saxton served in the War of 1812 from Malone. The list of his children is incomplete; there were ten children, seven of whom left families. (b) Lucinda, b. about 1808. (b) Orilla, b. about 1810. (b) 12. HENRY5 SAXTON (James4-3-2 George1) was born at Sheffield, Massachusetts, October 26, 1767. In 1780 he was living at Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York, and in the census of 1790 he was recorded from the same place. By 1795 he had removed to Butternuts, Otsego County, New York, where he died August 27, 1839. He was buried on his own farm on "West Hill." He married, about 1789, Mary Alcott [or Olcott], who survived him. She died at Guilford, New York, August 28, 1846, where she was buried. Children of Henrys and Mary (Alcott) Saxton: i. JOHN5 SAXTON (Jasper4 James3-2 George1) was born at Sheffield, Massachusetts, March 11, 1760 (f) He served in the Revolution from Berkshire county, Massachusetts, in four different enlistments, first as a drummer and afterwards as a private. In 1781 he served three months on the privateer Hunter commanded by Captain King Sage. John Saxton married, November 28, 1782, at Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut, Lucy Shead (or Shed), born November 30, 1758. They lived first at Sheffield, Massachusetts, but in 1784 or 1785 they removed to Milton, Saratoga County, (then Ballstown, Albany County,) New York, where they lived about ten years. They returned to Sheffield in 1794 or 1795. John Saxton died at Sheffield, February 23, 1839, and his widow Lucy died November 25, 1844. The eldest child and the two youngest were born at Sheffield, Massachusetts, the others at Milton, New York. Children of John5 and Lucy (Shead) Saxton: i. Jane, b. Aug. 28, 1783; m. ASHER5 SAXTON (Jasper4 James3-2 George1) was born at Sheffield, Massachusetts, April 3, 1762. (g) In 1779 he was described as seventeen years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, of light complexion. (h) Asher Saxton married ----- Bacon, a daughter of Captain William Bacon. About 1785 he removed to Ballstown, Saratoga County, New York, and six years later to Cooperstown, Otsego County. (g) About 1796 he settled at Bloomfield, Ontario County, where he was agent for the sale of a tract of land which his father-in-law owned. For many years the town meetings were held at his home. Asher Saxton was the first overseer of the poor at Bloomfield, and he was also commissioner of highways. (i) In 1798 he was appointed captain in the militia of Ontario County, in 1806 major, and in 1808 lieutenant-colonel in command of a regiment. (i) About 1813 he removed to Le Roy, Genesee County and two years later to Cambria, Niagara County, where he was a supervisor of the county in 1818. In 1821 he was living at Lockport, and about 1835 he went to Raisinville, Monroe County, Michigan, so that he might live with "his children, his son and son-in-law" (g) Doubtless Salmon Owen with whom he was living in 1840 was the son-in-law mentioned. Asher Saxton died near Monroe, Michigan, March 6, 1848. (g) All attempts to secure a list of his children have been unsuccessful. 15. PHILANDER5 SAXTON (Jasper4 James3-2 George1) was born at Sheffield, Massachusetts, October 16, 1772. (k) He was an early settler at Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York, and lived near his brother Asher. (i) In 1802 he was appointed lieutenant in the Ontario County militia and in 1806 captain. (l) Philander Saxton removed to Niagara County and during the latter part of his life lived at Cambria, where he died December 9, 1847. He was buried in the Averill cemetery not far from Lockport, New York. He married, first, Cynthia Cole, born October 24, 1774. She died April 24, 1829, and he married, secondly, Ellen Rose, born August 24, 1800, the widow of a Mr. Dudley and also of Henry Sheldon. Ellen (Rose) Saxton died August 19, 1858, at Lockport, New York, and was buried in Budd's cemetery at Cambria. Children of Philander and Cynthia (Cole) Saxton: i. Elijah R., b. Dec. 13, 1799; d. HORACE5 SAXTON (Frederick4 James3 -2 George1) was born July 17, 1779. He married Caby Smith and lived at Shelburne, Vermont. In 1830 he was president of the local temperance society (m) and in 1835 he was elected as representative to the Vermont legislature. (n) He died at Shelburne, June 9, 1848, aged 69 years.
