JAMES BLAINE8 SAXTON (John Sylvester7 Elisha6 Henry5 James4-3-2 George1) was born on a farm at Whiteford, Michigan, July 12, 1884.(f) He prepared himself as a forester and entered the government service in the Forestry Department in 1910. He continued in this work until 1920, when he resigned to join his brothers and brother-in-law in operating the National Bundle Tyer Company at Blissfield, Michigan. George2 Sexton (George1) seems to have been a sea captain or a sea trader.(g) It would seem that the only land he owned was four acres at Westfield, Massachusetts, which he probably received from his father. On October 16, 1678, he was living at Hartford, Connecticut,(h) (Deeds); on March 25, 1681, he was living at Westfield, Massachusetts, (Springfield Deeds, Vol. A B. p. 41); and on October 31, 1690, he was living at Newtown, Long Island.(i) George Sexton married Hannah Spencer, born April 15, 1653, daughter of Sergeant Thomas Spencer of Hartford, Connecticut. The date of his death is unknown, but his widow returned to Hartford and married, secondly, November 29, 1698, Daniel Brainerd of Haddam, Connecticut, as his third wife. He died April 1, 1715. She survived him, but the date of her death is not known. Descendants generally spell the name, Sexton. Children of George2 and Hannah (Spencer) Sexton: i. Joseph2 Sexton (George1) was born February 3, 1666, probably at Windsor, Connecticut.(n) He married, November 20, 1690, Hannah Wright, born July 28, 1669, d. Nov. 26, 1742, at Enfield, Conn., daughter of Abel Wright of Springfield, Massachusetts. He settled in that part of Springfield, then known as Endfield (now Enfield and Somers, Connecticut), where his name and that of his son Joseph are found as witnesses to a deed in 1715 from Daniel Miller to Thomas Jones. Hannah's mother was scalped by the Indians, July 26, 1708, but she lived until October 19 of that year. Joseph Sexton was captain of the militia at Enfield. He died at Enfield, May 3, 1742, aged 76 years, and his widow Hannah died the twenty-sixth of the next November, aged 73.(p) Descendants are usually called Saxton. She died April 17, 1759. The old homestead, near Westfield, was known as "Little River," and as it was strongly built, it was used In early times as a fort and as a refuge from the Indians. They lived for a short time at Perry, Wyoming County, New York, where their oldest child was born and about 1820 they settled at Ellington, Chautauqua County, where their other children were born.
