The Ord Quiz, October 23, 1919
We buried Frank Kates today. People living in Ord fifteen or more years ago 
will remember him and his family well. He was a carpenter there and has 
followed that trade here since moving down to Lincoln some 14 years ago. 
Despite his advance years he kept active at work until the past two years, when 
he had to let up on the harder kinds of work. He was foreman of a gang at the 
time of his death and complained to his men Thursday that he did not feel just 
right and did not take hold as usual. But he retired feeling apparently about 
as well as usual. About 3:30 in the morning his good wife heard him breathing 
heavily and found that he was sinking and the family and doctor were at once 
called, He died Friday morning at 10 o'clock of cerebral hemorrhage. The 
funeral was held from his residence, 1018 K Street Sunday afternoon. Many of 
his old Ord friends were present. The services were conducted by Rev. W. E. J. 
Grats of the Saint Paul's Methodist Church.
Frank A. Kates was born in Wilmington, Del. Jun. 28, 1859, and was married to 
Lucy H. Johnson on Jan. 28, 1873. Six children were born of them, two of them 
being buried at Ord.
Mr. and Mrs. Kates moved to Ord in 1886 and moved to Lincoln in 1905. In both 
places they have many friends. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. 
Lulu Roosa and Jennie Capron, and two sons, E. J. Kates of University Place and 
H. F. Kates of San Diego, Calif. The latter, of course, could not be present at 
the funeral.
