After he became of age he followed the business of peddling dry goods, and being a good salesman he accumulated an amount sufficient to give him a start in the world, when he went to Kansas sometime before 1860, where he, in a short time, accumulated a handsome property. Aug. 21, 1863, a band of brigands from the Southern States; calling themselves bush-whackers, made a raid into Kansas, and he, with many others, fell a victim to their bloody hands. He was first robbed of his watch and what money he had about him, and when he supposed they had all left he stepped out of his dwelling upon the sidewalk, when a straggling, drunken outlaw rode up and deliberately shot him through his lungs. He lived long enough to tell a friend where he had buried a large sum of money. The miscreant who did the bloody work soon bit the dust by the unerring aim of trusty rifles in the hands of the outraged citizens. 7th, Henry, b.
