He married Martha, dau. of Aaron Kimball of Grafton, Mass., and came to Walpole in 1804, and purchased what is now known as "Lane’s Mills," where he remained a few years, when he removed to the south part of the town, and established the business of tanning, which has been described in the narrative portion of this work. Mr. Chase was a very industrious citizen, utilizing every means to turn an honest penny. One peculiar trait of his character was never to sacrifice utility to ornament. He had a strong inclination for invention, and was easy only when getting up some novel improvement. He was a strong Universalist in sentiment, and nothing delighted him more than an argument with an opponent on the subject of religion. He was an obliging neighbor and a peace-loving, good citizen. He survived his wife seven years, and died Feb. 24, 1865, aged 87 years. Ch. I. Charles E., b. in Grafton, .Mass., Nov. 6, 1803, and came to Walpole with his parents. He m.
