He was a descendant of the Scotch Presbyterians that settled in the north of Ireland nearly two hundred years ago. In his younger days he went into the wilds of Maine and spent several seasons there in hunting and trapping. About 1784 he came to Walpole with Dr. Abraham Holland, and worked for him as a hired man about three years, when, in 1787, he married Cynthia, daughter of James Allen of this town, add located on land lying north of Henry Burt’s, a portion of which is still held by his descendants. He died Dec. 1, 1829, from cancer in the face, after having suffered many years. His wife died Nov 12, 1816, aged 45 years. Ch. I. Betsey, b. 1789; m. Alpheus Paul, and had two sons, 1st. Nelson, d. in Maria, N.Y. 2d, Albert, m. and went to Utica, N.Y., and was killed in the war of the Rebellion. II. John, b. 1790; m. first, Annette, dau. of Montgomery Wires, of this town, by whom he had one son, Lewis, b. in 1822; 2d, m. Caroline M., dau. of Preston and Vashti Titus, by whom he had three ch. (See Ap.) Lewis d. April 3,1864. John Dunshee m. Olive Abbott, of Springfield, Vt., for his second wife, and died Oct. 28, 1848; his wife died about 1850. III. William, b. 1792; d. 1873. He was a miller and mechanic, and in the latter part of his life lived in the Valley. He married Melinda, dau. of Jonathan Fletcher, of this town, and had five children that lived to maturity. 1st, Osborn, m. in Maine, and has a family 2d, Loren, lives in Massachusetts. 3d. Carlos E, m. Sarah, dau. of Gardner and Fanny (Graves) Dodge, of this town, and lives in the Valley. 4th, Henry, killed in California. 5th, Louisa, m. first, a Lane; m. second, George Hoadley. IV. Laurinda, b. April 2, 1800; m. Carlton Wiers, in 1826, and had two ch., Lewis and Diana. He resided in Stockholm, N.Y., and died there in 1849; his first wife died in 1846. V. Diantha, also m. Carlton Wiers, and died in 1871 aged 72 years. VI. Irene, b. 1796; m. Luther Burt. (See Burt.) VII. Fanny, b. 1803; m. Jonathan Emery and removed to Stockholm, N.Y., and has seven children. VIII. Allen, b. June 10, 1814; m. Martha, dau. of Samuel Pierce of Westmoreland, April 4, 1839; she d. Dec. 30, 1877. Ch. 1st, Herbert A., b. Feb. 3, 1846. 2d, William L., b. Sept. 9, 1854. He follows the sea. 3d, Allen L., d. in infancy. Allen Dunshee is now (1879) living with his second wife, who was the widow Fisk, and dau. of John Curtin of Westmoreland; m. June 24, 1878.
