Emerson. When the men of this town were called upon to serve their country in the great struggle for Liberty and Independence, he was among the number who was willing to fight and die for the liberty of coming generations. He was wounded at some of the engagements near Saratoga; of which wounds he afterwards died, leaving a wife and four or more children. At this remote time it is impossible to gather much information in relation to the family, as there are but few of his descendants now living in town. Lucy, his wife, died Dec. 10, 1834, aged 92. Ch. I. Capt. Joseph, b. 1763; m. Sarah Graves of this town, and settled on a farm east of John W. Taggard’s, where be lived during life He died Sep. 13, 1831, aged 68; she d. Apr. 25, 1847, aged 84. Ch. 1st, Calvin, d. young. 2d, Artemas, went to Ithica, N.Y. and was a lawyer there. 3d, Luther, m. a Kibling and went to Strafford, Vt. 4th, Sarah, went to Rochester, N.Y. 5th, Fanny, m. Willard Griswold, of this town. 6th, Rebecca, m. a Gilbert and went to New York. 7th, Robert, m. Annie Cummings of Marlboro, N.H.; d. July 22,1826, aged 31. 8th, Betsey, m. William Howard, of Rockingham, Vt., and at one time resided in this town. 9th Joseph Lewis, m. Sally, dau of Amasa Carpenter, of this town, occupation farming. 10th, Tirzah, m. Loren W. Clark. (See Clark ) 11th, Allen, m: a Kingsbury, of Alstead; she died and he married her niece by the same name. He went to Milford, Mass., and established himself there as a physician, had an extensive practice and rose to eminence in his profession. II. Holland, m. Lucy Stevens and settled on the elevation of land in the eastern part of the town, known as "Fay Hill," and spent his days there. He was deacon of the old church for many years and was familiarly known as Deacon Fay. He lived a life of purity and uprightness of character, and died Sep. 30, 1844, aged 75. Ch. 1st, Calvin, m. Sophia, dau. of .Matthew Dickey, of this town, and went to New York. 2d Luther, m. Betsey Morrison, settled in town, d. Dec. 24,1830, aged 35. 3d, Lucy, m. Thomas Howe, of Rindge. 4th, Charlotte, m. Eliphaz Allen, of Rindge. 5th, Calista, m. Gilman Powers, of Rindge. 6th, Holland Dana, m. Fanny Barnett and settled in town. 7th, Oliver Stevens, m. Deborah Perkins, of Perkinsville, Vt., both died the past winter, (1879). 8th, Caroline, m. Rev. Josiah Knights, and went to Randolph, Vt. 9th, Sophia Maria, m. John Wetherbee, of Rindge. There were three other children in Deacon Fay’s family all of whom died in infancy. III. Levi, married Mary Prentiss, and lived on a farm now owned by William Arnold, lying east of the residence of Eli Graves. His children were. 1st, Orlando P. who went off early to Plattsburg, N.Y. 2d, Levi. He studied medicine with Dr. Bond and went West. 3d, Mary, m. Levi Waldo and moved into the western country. 4th, Willard, m. 1st, Phebe Downs, 2d, Laura Williams, and went west. 5th, Harriet, m. Harry Jennison and lived and died in town. 6th, Ruth Prentiss, b. July 7, 1799; m. Henry S. Allen, now living (1879) in town. 7th, Laura, m. Calvin Carpenter lived in town. 8th, Pauline, m. Simeon Ballon and lived and died in Keene. 9th, .Mason, m. Jane Cochran of this town and had three children, George, Mary and Robert, he now lives in Hanover, N.H. 10th Stephen, m. Amanda, dau. of Elisha Angier, lived, and died in town Jan. 19, 1862, aged 53. 11th, Clarissa, m. George Hooper and is now living in Putney, Vt. IV. Reuben, b. Apr. 3,1776; m. Hepsibeth, dau. of Nehemiah Kidder and went to Windham, Vt. Of the three above-named Fay families, consisting of 34 ch., only one is living in town today, and but few of the descendants.
