He removed from Surry to Walpole in the spring of 1797, and purchased his place of one Nathaniel Cross. His children were most of them born in Surry. Soon after he settled in town he planted a butternut a tree in his yard, which is still thrifty, and is a monarch of its kind. It has afforded an ample shade in summer, and bore nuts in profusion for three generations to crack. He died Nov. 29, 1829; she died March 28, 1836, aged 71 years. They were buried on "Carpenter’s Hill," where were also three of his children, one of whom, Sally, who married Asahel Robbins was forty-five years of age; the other two were infants. There was also a son by the name of Cyrus, b. Sept. 5, 1797, and a dau., Huldah, who m. Thomas Wyman. (See Wyman.) Nothing more is known of the son. Asa, b. Dec. 21, 1792, is still living (1879) on the old homestead, who m. Frinday Howard, of Winchester, N.H., June 11, l820, and had the following ch.: 1st, Thankful Hawkins, b. June 19, 1821; m. Harding Ball, July 4, 1841, and has four ch. (See Ap.), and resides on the Gilbert homestead. 2d, Harriet Sophia, b. May 6, 1822; m. Charles A. Kendall, April 11, 1843, and lives in Gardiner, Mass., and has ch.: (1) Charles A. (2) Warren H. (3) Henry W. (4) Hattie L. (5) Emma E. 3d, George Howard, b. June 26, 1823; m. Mary Jane, dau. of Mason and Jane (Cochran) Fay, May 5, 1852, and has ch.: (1) Ella J. T. (2) Elmon H. (8) Mary I. (4) George H. He went south after his majority, and was for several years a teacher there. He served as chairman on the board of selectmen in this town at the opening of the Rebellion, and did efficient service. He now resides in Keene, N.H., cultivating a taste for science and literature, for which he has a strong penchant. 4th, Arad, b. Oct. 25, 1824; m. Hepzibeth Forbush, and resides in Hinsdale, N.H. Ch. (1) Fred M. (2) Alice Amanda S. 5th, Daniel Henry, b. July 3, 1827; m. Sophia, dau. of Charles and Amy (Sherman) Watkins. 6th, Lorinda, b. Oct. 30, 1828; m. Geo. B. Conaut, and is a widow, with four children, residing in Gardner, Mass. Ch. (1) Ella I. (2) Fred H. (3) Frank. (4) Erwin C. 7th, Charles, b. May 7, 1830; m. Jape Davis. He was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness, and died of his wounds, in the hospital at Washington, D. C. They had two ch. 8th, Dexter Wright, b. July 19, 1832; m. Eliza Jane Cooley, and has ch.: (1) Ethan A. (2) Charles F. He resides in Keene, N.H.
