I. Ethan. II. Maria. III. Carlos. IV. and V. John and Sarah. The latter m. a Pierce of Boston. VI. Caroline. VII. Gardner. All removed to the West. GRISWOLD, ELISHA. Elisha and Lucinda Griswold had the following family of children born in this town, but where they lived is not known. I. Harry Willard, b. Nov. 2, 1795. II. Willis, b. July 6, 1797. III. Ethan, b. Nov. 6, 1799. IV. Polly, b. Aug. 24, 1801. GRISWOLD, GILBERT, was from Connecticut and belonged to one of the numerous families by that name that settled early there and were of great respectability. He came to this town between 1780- 90, and was for many years a farmer and tavern keeper, on the place now owned by Gardiner Dodge. Everything about his farm was kept in perfect order, and at every entrance to his various lots he had a gate, even into his woodlands. He was a jolly, good-natured man, and his society was sought for his social qualities. He was born June 6, 1761, and married Rebecca Nichols, who was born Mar. 2, 1768. He d. June 2, 1827; his wife d. Mar. 15, 1837. Ch. I. Gilbert, Jr., b. Apr. 16, 1788; m. Louisa Wells of Keene, and went to Illinois in the early settlement of that state and founded a town there which took the name of Griswold. II. Calvin Webb, b. Oct. 15, 1791; m. Sally C. Goodnow of Westmoreland, and lived and died in this town. Ch. 1st. Calvin, b. Jan. 20, 1818; m. Alma A. Green, and had three children; Emma E., Frank G., and John C. 2d. Louisa, b. Oct. 30, 1819; m. Rev. T. C. Pierce of Boston. She has one child, Louisa. 3d. Nichols, b Dec. 5, 1820; d. young. 4th. Sarah, b. Aug. 22, 1822; m. Moses J. Hale. Ch. (1) S. Louisa, m. Charles Gilbert; she d. 1879. (2) Isabella, d. young. (3) Charles B. (4) Abbie E., m. Waldo F. Whitney, a dentist, of Boston. (5) Lillia R. (6) Gilbert G. (7) Perly W., d. young. (8) John E. (See Ap.) 5th. Gilbert, b. June 27, 1824. He never m; lives in Nevada. 6th. John Milton, m. Mary Stearns of Boston; he had two ch. by his first wife, and three by his second. 7th. Charles Webb, b. May 11, 1829; m. Addie W. Homer, of Belmont, Mass. He keeps a hotel in New York city and his life, so far, has been a pecuniary success. III. Rebecca, b. Sept. 4, 1794; m. Orrick Look. She had two ch. (1) Rebecca, m. Charles Darby, and lives in Chester, Vt. (2) Orrick, m. Eliza Goodell; lived and died in Boston. IV. George Stanley; m. Harriet Lovel, of Rockingham, Vt., and is still living. He is remembered by many as the one who taught them to "trip the light fantastic toe." He has three ch. all living in Rockingham. GRISWOLD, JOSIAH, married --, and lived on the place where George Watkins now resides, and d. Jan. 1, 1821, aged 71. His ch. were I. Josiah, jr., m. ---. II. Jemima, m. Sterling Graves, Apr. 18, 1805. (See Graves.) III. Phebe, m. Asa Hurd, Feb. 7, 1797. IV. Lovisa. V. Susan, m. Joseph Cobb, Apr. 17, 1811. He was a shoemaker in town for several years. VI. Siba, m. William Pierce, of Westmoreland, Oct. 14, 1811. VII. Daniel, m. Lettice Stickney. VIII. Willard, m. Fannie Fay. IX. Hubbard, m. Ruth Sylvester and went to Dansville, N.Y. Besides the foregoing children, there were two named Clara; one or both of whom died young. GRISWOLD, STEPHEN, lived in this town about the year 1800; he married Elizabeth Poor, Apr. 2,1798, and had two children, but subsequently removed to Westmoreland and had the care of the toll bridge on Connecticut river there. Ch. I. Elizabeth Stevens, b. Jan. 28, 1799. II. Stephen Andrew, b. Jan. 18, 1805, and died soon after his majority.
