John Jennison was the fourth son of Samuel, and Mary (Stearns) Jennison, and was born in Watertown, Feb. 19, 1710. He married Mary Hubbard, of Groton, Mass., born Apr. 12, 1725. She was the daughter of Maj. Jonathan and Rebecca (Brown) Hubbard. He, (Jona.) died in Lunenburg in 1751, and his widow, (Mary,) married Col. Benjamin Bellows, of Walpole. She had six children that came to Walpole with her, viz. 1st. Mary, b. Nov. 12, 1741; m. Josiah Willard, of Keene. 2d. John, b. June 15, 1744, known as Capt. John; married 1st Keziah, dau. of Josiah and Catharine Spring, of Ashford, Conn.; b. Oct. 21, 1745; d. April 10, 1771. His children were, I. Josiah, b. Nov. 1, 1767; married in Savannah, Ga., Apr. 22, 1792, Ann Chamberlain. II. Samuel, b. Aug. 29, 1769; m. Ruth Porter Steele. Capt. John married for his second wife, Sybil Bishop, of Woodstock, Conn.; ch. III. John, jr., b. Feb. 7, 1773, and m. Polly, dau. of Asa Gage, in 1794. IV. Rebecca, b. Aug. 13, 1774; m. Elijah Kilburn. (See Kilburn.) V. Mary, b. Dec. 7, 1777; m. Solomon Godfrey, Sep. 20, 1801, and bore him several children. VI. William, b. Dec. 29, 1798; m. Phebe Fields, an estimable woman, Dec. 14, 1804, one of twenty-one children by the same father. Ch. 1st. Edwin, b. Aug. 26, 1805; m. Mary B. Shannon, by whom he had four children, two of whom survived; (1) Edwin Shannon, who is deputy collector of customs in Charleston, S.C. (2) Helen, who m. ---- Adams, a cotton manufacturer, and lives in Conway, Mass. Edwin Jennison graduated at Dartmouth, and became a Congregational clergyman; but his health became impaired and he had to relinquish his profession, and resort to a farm in Winchester, N.H., where he now lives. (See history of ch.) 2d, Orville, b. Mar. 17, 1808; m. Lucy M. Field, of Danville, Vt., who bore him three daughters. He now lives in Iowa, a widower. 3d, Eliza Emma, b. Apr. 11, 1814; m. Charles G. Livermore, and had four ch.--three sons and one daughter. She now lives in Worcester, Mass. 4th, Phebe Augusta, b. July, 1820; lives in Worcester, unm. William Jennison had two children who died in infancy. VII. Lucinda, b. Sep. 3, 1780; m. Prosper Booth, Nov.3, 1809. VIII. Levi, b. Dec. 13, 1781; m. first, Prudence, dau. of James Fuller, Sep. 27, 1813: and second, Eliza A. Howard, of Alstead; he lived and died in Alstead. The number of his children is not obtained. Capt. John Jennison, the progenitor of the foregoing race died Oct. 16, 1804, aged 61; his wife, Sybil, d. Mar. 16, 1819, aged 75. He was the recipient of Col. Bellows’ bounty to the extent of fifty acres of land, comprising a portion of the farm now owned by William T. Ramsey. Previous to the time John Jennison occupied the farm, it had been leased to Timothy Messer, who had cleared a considerable portion of it. Col. Bellows wanted it for his stepson John, and Messer was forced, reluctantly, to leave. Mr. Jennison spent his days there, when it was occupied by his son William, where he spent the greater portion of his life in sheep husbandry. There are none of the foregoing family remaining in town. William Jennison died July 2, 1855; his wife May 13, 1860, aged 77. The third child of Mary (Jennison) Bellows died in infancy. The fourth, Rebecca, b. 1748, d. Feb. 5, 1771. The fifth d. in infancy, and the sixth, Jonathan, b. Dec. 25, 1751, m. Rhoda Ashley of Hartland, Vt. Col. Bellows gave Jonathan fifty acres of land which was the nucleus of the farm now owned by Edwin Hosmer, our townsman; there he settled and remained till 1784-5 when he sold it to Deacon Jonas Hosmer, and removed farther south, on to the farm now owned by Chas. A. Watkins, where he lived till he died, when it was occupied by his son Thomas, and then by Thomas’s son John, and lastly by John jr. Jonathan was the progenitor of all persons bearing the name of Jennison remaining in town today (1879.) Jonathan’s children were, I. A girl named Nabby. II. Another girl named Nabby III. Jonathan jr., b. 1775, m. Danae Dunham. Ch. 1st, Harry, b. Nov. 28, 1800; m. Harriet Fay, of this town, and had children, one of whom, Josiah, is living in town, (See Ap.) 2d, Levi Durham, b. Aug. 11, 1802. 3d, Luraney, b. Apr. 27, 1807; m., late in life, David 0. Thompson. 4th, Rhoda, b. Dec. 23, 1808. 5th, Horace Allen, b. Jan. 11, 1801. IV. Thomas b. 1776, m. Martha Moore. Ch. 1st, Thomas Moore, b. Nov. 18, 1805; m. Fanny A. Dixon, Feb. 21, 1839. 2d, John, b. June 14, 1807; m. Elvira, dau. of Thomas Russell. Ch. (1) Geo. R., b. Jan. 13, 1834, m. Emily, twin dau. of Leo. Sparhawk, and resides in town. (2) Wm. White, b. Aug. 31, 1835, died early. (3) John jr., b. Oct. 4, 1837; m. Mary E. Grout of Westminster, Vt.; died Nov. 29, 1875. (4) David A., b. Jan. 28, 1838; m. Laura Brockway, of Rockingham, Vt. (5) Charles H., b. Aug. 28, 1839. He was in the war of the Rebellion, lives at the West. (6) Mary E., b. Mar. 3, 1842; m. Frank George, of Bellows Falls. Vt. (7) Warren H., m. Mar. 28, 1848. (8) Frank R., b. Dec. 31, 1847; m. Lydia Mills and lives at the West. V. Nabby, b. Mar. 22, 1778; she lived in town, unmarried, to old age, and d. Jan. 28, 1870. VI. Martin, b. June 30, 1799; went south VII. Rhoda, b. Sep. 3, 1780, m. Pliny Bliss, June 4, 1812, and moved west. VIII. Daniel, b. Nov. 3, 1782; he was a physician and settled in Hartland, Vt. IX. Charles, b. a year or two later, what be came of him is not known. 3d, Daniel Ashley, b. Sep. 3, 1808; went to the state of New York. 4th, Mary Holland, b. June 5, 1813, m. Oct. 21, 1838, John W. Lovejoy, of Littleton, N.H., and is still living. 5th, George Charles, b. Oct. 4, 1818; still living in Philadelphia, Penn. There was a Mary that died July 28, 1811, aged 1 year. Jonathan Jennison sen., d. Sep. 11, 1835, aged 84.
