Lovell, and was born in Rockingham, Vt., Aug. 2, 1789. He worked on his father’s farm there until he was twenty two or twenty three years of age, when, becoming weary of farm life and labor, he commenced attending school, at Chester Academy, where, he remained awhile, and from there he went to New Market, N.H. and fitted for college in 1818. He then entered the law office of Hon. Daniel Kellogg, of Saxtons River, Vt., and remained two years reading law, when he was admitted to the bar at Newfane, Vt. He commenced the practice of his profession in his native town; but soon removed to Drewsville, N.H., where, and in Alstead, he continued practice till the time of his death, which occurred Mar. 12, 1866. He held but few public offices; the most important being County Solicitor, from 1840 to 1850. Mr. Lovell possessed very tender and generous feelings, was eminently social in his intercourse with mankind, enjoyed the rehearsal of a good story and could tell one well himself. He was a close observer of human nature, and was fond of making a travesty of the weak side of it. As a lawyer he was honest, and in the pursuit of justice, he was untiring. Nothing would make him more impatient than to see wrongdoing go unpunished. He married Martha, dau. of Paul and Martha (Haskell) Willard, of Lancaster, Mass, and granddaughter of Col. Henry Haskell, of Revolutionary memory. She was born at Lancaster, May 26, 1799, and died at Drewsville, Aug. 12, 1851. Ch. I. Aldis, d. in infancy. II. Bolivar Lovell received no education, except what he acquired at Drewsville, up to the age of sixteen, when he went into the employ of Cragin & Hartwell, merchants, Providence, R.I. Here he remained three years, when he returned to Drewsville, and commenced the study of law, in the office of his father, at Alstead, about 1845. In 1847 he was appointed Deputy Sheriff; and acted in that capacity, still pursuing his law studies in the office of Lowell and Wait, at Alstead, till 1855, when he was appointed sheriff for the County of Cheshire, which office he held for ten years. In 1862 he received the appointment of U. S. Assessor of Internal Revenue for the third New Hampshire district and acceptably discharged its duties about eight years. In 1869 he was admitted to the Sullivan County Bar, at Newport, N.H., and has since practiced his profession at Alstead. In 1873-4 he was elected a member of the Governor’s Council. IV. Henry A, b.
