At the age of sixteen he enlisted in the Revolutionary army, but, being below the regulation size and weight, he was rejected as a soldier; but the spirit of patriotism or adventure was stronger than parental authority or army regulations, and he was finally admitted into the ranks as officer’s assistant, in which capacity he served during the remainder of the war, under Gen’l McDougal. One winter he was steward in Gen’l Washington’s family, where he delighted to assist Mrs. Washington in her domestic affairs in the kitchen. One anecdote related by him was, that when Martha was baking flapjacks it was stipulated that every one that broke in turning should be his, and he sometimes thought the good woman broke them purposely. After the war was over his parents removed to Derry, N.H., whence, he, with others, came to Maypole, in 1781, and pitched his future home on Derry Hill, purchasing the wild land of Theodore Atkinson. Three y ears later, after making a clearing and building a habitation, he returned to Derry, and married Jane, daughter of Dea. Edmund and Hannah (Thurston) Adams, of Newburyport, Mass., who was born Feb. 13, 1773. Her father was cousin of President John Quincy Adams and it is said that there was a striking family resemblance between them. His family were known for their scholarly attainments. Jacob, a son accumulated $20,000, as a teacher, which he left, at his death, at the age of thirty-six, to found the "Adams Academy" in Derry, N.H., which still bears his name.
