Of the early life of John Maynard verger little is known, as his father died when he was but three years old, and, being deprived of a parental home, he could learn but little of his ancestry, to impart to his children. He was born in Chesterfield, N.H., Mar. 28,1785, and was brought up in one of the Blake families, in Keene, N.H. He learned the saddler’s trade, in Chester, Vt., and came to this town early in the present century and worked for Maj. Grant, as a journeyman; for a while, and then commenced business for himself. He at one time owned a line of staging from this town to Chester, Vt., and built the original house afterwards owned by Dr. Morse. He married Lydia, dau. of Eliphas Graves, Apr. 28, 1811, by whom he had ten children, two of whom died in infancy. Those that survived were the following: I. Lorinda Hart, b. Feb. 2d, 1814; m. William C. Sherman, Mar. 28, 1837. II. Fanny R., b. Apr. 2, 1813; died Feb. 8, 1834, a former wife of William C. Sherman. III. Amherst Kingsbury, b. Dec. 19, 1814; m. Maria Geer, of Charlestown, N.H., June 13, 1844. Ch. 1st, William A., b. Mar. 27, 1845; m. Frances Perry, June 10, 1868. 2d, Charles G., b. Sep. 28, 1846; Mary G., dau. of Thomas Dinsmore, of Alstead, Oct. 25,1877. 2d, Lizzie M., b. May 17, 1852. 4th, Mary E., b. Jan. 25, 1858. Mr. A. K. Maynard carried on the manufacture of boots and shoes from about the time he was married till 1870, when physical infirmities compelled him to relinquish business. He was postmaster from 1853 to 1861. IV. Mary Augusta, b. Nov. 22, 1816; m. Augustus Faulkner, Sep. 7, 1864, issue one son, George M. V. George Carlisle, b. Dec. 2, 1819, left Walpole, Aug. 26, 1833, for Cincinnati, Ohio, and went into the shoe store of Stedman, Shaw & Co.; George Carlisle, his cousin, being a silent partner. The style of the firm was afterwards changed to Stedman, Maynard & Co. Here he remained in business till 1864, having, during the time, accumulated a handsome fortune. He d.
