He married Roxalana, dau. of Nathaniel and Sarah Eaton, of Mansfield, Conn., who was one of a family of thirteen children; and a brother of hers was Gen. Wm. Eaton, U. S. Army, Consul to Tripoli, and commander of the American forces during the war with Algiers. Stephen was married in Greenwich, Conn., May 10, 1796, and started for New Hampshire the same day, on horseback--one horse bearing the burden of both. He was a cabinetmaker by trade and a very ingenious workman, his ingenuity being transmitted to several of his posterity He lived in various places in town, at one time on the place now owned by John Selkirk, where he built the house that once stood on the site of the present dwelling. Henry Mellish, was a man who possessed more than ordinary intellectual powers and was a natural mechanic, which is proved by the number of his inventions and patents obtained for them. He represented the town in the General Court in 1856-7, and was at one time a practicing Physician in town. He was a great reader, and took a lively interest in the world’s progress. In the last years of his life he was engaged in horticulture. He lived a blameless life, and died, much respected by his townsmen, Oct. 20, 1878. VIII. Sarah S., b. Apr. 4, 1807; m.
